Senior Data Scientist (Outage & Extreme Weather) (Machine Learning/Power Systems): Building and operationalizing spatio-temporal models that predict weather-driven transmission and distribution outages, infrastructure failure, and wildfire ignition risk with an accent on mechanistic modeling, probabilistic methods, and real-time forecasting. Focus on integrating weather, asset, outage, and geospatial data, optimizing production workflows, and validating AI-assisted scientific code.
Location: Remote, Spain only

What you will do
- Design, develop, and validate machine learning and statistical models for weather-driven transmission and distribution outages.
- Build spatio-temporal models linking weather forecasts to infrastructure failure risk and probability-of-failure estimates.
- Model relationships between transmission outages, extreme weather, and wildfire ignition risk.
- Integrate weather, infrastructure, outage, and geospatial datasets into reproducible modeling pipelines.
- Operationalize research-grade models in fast, reliable real-time forecasting systems.
- Collaborate with meteorologists, risk modelers, software engineers, and utility customers to evaluate and improve products.
Requirements
- Ph.D. in environmental engineering, atmospheric science, civil engineering, statistics, data science, or a related quantitative field strongly preferred; a relevant master’s degree with substantial applied experience may be considered.
- Demonstrated experience developing transmission outage prediction models is required.
- At least 5 years of academic or industry experience applying statistical modeling and machine learning to grid reliability, storm outage prediction, or related energy-sector problems.
- Strong knowledge of ensemble methods, neural networks, probabilistic models, spatio-temporal modeling, and physics-based approaches.
- Advanced Python skills with NumPy, Pandas, Scikit-learn, TensorFlow, or PyTorch; experience with geospatial data and large multidimensional weather datasets.
- Hands-on experience using agentic coding tools and reviewing AI-generated code for scientific correctness.
Nice to have
- Experience working with utilities, ISOs/RTOs, or grid operators on weather-related operational forecasting.
- Experience with R, SQL, or Julia.
- Peer-reviewed publications, patents, or deployed production models in outage prediction, wildfire risk, or extreme weather impacts.
