Lead Software Engineer (AI)

Location: Hybrid/remote; remote work is available within the United States, or the role may be based in Seattle or Chicago.

Salary: $150,000–$224,000 annual base salary, plus an annual performance bonus and long-term incentives.

What you will do

• Own the technical roadmap and delivery for a major area of Gavel across the front end, agent harness, and data layer.
• Design and build agentic capabilities, including tool definitions, prompts, context assembly, structured outputs, guardrails, evaluation sets, and Word and web experiences.
• Run evaluation and release cycles, analyze acceptance rates and model-quality changes, and determine production readiness.
• Build and operate cloud-native services with feature-flagged deployments, monitoring, observability, and rollback processes.
• Lead design reviews, establish coding and testing standards, mentor engineers, participate in hiring, and collaborate with product, design, platform, identity, and security teams.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience building production software in service-oriented, continuously deployed teams, including at least 1 year shipping LLM-based products or features to real users.
• Experience building full-stack web and agentic applications with tool use, function calling, multi-step orchestration, structured outputs, retries, failure handling, and debugging of non-deterministic systems.
• Practical experience with evaluation sets, metrics, LLM-as-judge methods, and connecting offline results to online outcomes.
• Knowledge of retrieval and context engineering, including embeddings, hybrid search, chunking, ranking, and context budgeting.
• Experience with AWS or Azure, containers, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, production observability, and at least one of TypeScript or Python; ability to work with React, Node or Python services, and PostgreSQL.
• Experience leading a small engineering team while continuing to deliver production code, with strong communication and problem-solving skills.
