TL;DR
Materials & Failure Analysis Engineer (Gas Turbine): Investigating degradation and failures in advanced gas turbine components through materials characterization, metallurgy, coatings analysis, and root cause analysis with an accent on high-temperature materials systems and fleet reliability. Focus on performing microscopy and fracture investigations, analyzing fatigue, creep, oxidation, corrosion, and wear, and developing technical recommendations for manufacturing, repair, and product development.

What you will do

  • Lead failure analysis, root cause analysis, and engineering assessments of gas turbine components.
  • Perform materials characterization and fracture investigations using metallography, optical microscopy, SEM, EDS, chemical analysis, and laboratory techniques.
  • Evaluate nickel-based superalloys, stainless steels, intermetallics, thermal barrier coatings, and other advanced coating systems.
  • Analyze fatigue, creep, oxidation, corrosion, wear, and other high-temperature degradation mechanisms.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, service, product engineering, suppliers, and customers on reliability, repair, qualification, and fleet initiatives.
  • Prepare technical reports, engineering assessments, presentations, purchase specifications, and process specifications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience in materials engineering, metallurgy, failure analysis, or materials characterization.
  • Hands-on experience investigating metallic component failures and degradation mechanisms.
  • Strong knowledge of superalloys, stainless steels, heat treatment, coatings, and material processing.
  • Experience interpreting mechanical, physical, environmental, and materials test data and communicating findings through reports, presentations, and customer interactions.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship; export control rules require U.S. citizenship or nationality, permanent residence, refugee status, or asylum status.

Nice to have

  • Master’s or PhD in Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Gas turbine, aerospace engine, power generation, fleet, service, repair, overhaul, or life-assessment experience.
  • Expertise with thermal barrier, oxidation-resistant, diffusion, and wear-resistant coatings.
  • Project leadership experience with budgets, schedules, and cross-functional technical teams.
