R&D PhD Summer Intern: AI Agents for Automated Machine Learning Research

Location: Onsite in Mason, Ohio, United States; 5 days per week in the office

What you will do

• Review research on LLM-based AI agents, automated machine learning, and AI-enabled research systems.
• Prepare time-series datasets and build reproducible baseline models and evaluation pipelines.
• Design and implement an AI-agent framework for proposing, executing, and analyzing machine learning experiments.
• Investigate data preprocessing, feature representation, model architectures, training strategies, and hyperparameter selection.
• Establish validation, experiment tracking, and reproducibility practices for AI-generated configurations and code.
• Compare AI-enabled and conventional experimentation and present documented results, limitations, and recommendations to the R&D team.

Requirements

• Currently pursuing a PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Data Science, Electrical Engineering, Statistics, or a related field.
• Experience developing and evaluating machine learning or deep learning models.
• Hands-on experience with PyTorch or TensorFlow and proficiency in Python.
• Understanding of model training, validation, performance evaluation, and experimental design.
• Ability to review technical literature, formulate research hypotheses, and create reproducible experiments.
• Availability for a 12-week internship from May or early June through August 2027, working five days per week onsite in Mason, Ohio.

Nice to have

• Experience with large language models, generative AI, multi-step agentic workflows, or multi-agent systems.
• Experience with LangGraph, Arize, automated machine learning, hyperparameter optimization, experiment orchestration, or tracking systems.
• Experience with time-series modeling and research contributions through publications, patents, grants, presentations, or open-source projects.
