Human-Centered AI Research Intern, Causal Reasoning Models

Location: Los Altos, California, United States; hybrid, in-office role

Salary: $45–$65 per hour for California-based roles.

What you will do

• Research how language-based generative machine learning models perform causal reasoning.
• Develop, test, validate, and improve methods for causal reasoning in large language models.
• Own a research project from inception and ideation through validation.
• Publish findings at relevant conferences or journals, including NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, CLeaR, UAI, COLM, ACL, EMNLP, or TMLR.
• Collaborate with machine learning, behavioral, and social scientists on human-centered AI research.
• Connect research outcomes with potential business impact at Toyota.

Requirements

• Current Ph.D. student in AI/ML, computer science, data science, statistics, or a related field.
• Publication record or demonstrated research experience in causal inference, including structural causal models, identification, or counterfactual reasoning.
• Hands-on experience with LLM evaluation and benchmarking, mechanistic interpretability, or methods for improving LLM reasoning.
• Experience with Python and deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch.
• Interest in human-centered research, behavioral science, computational social science, experiments, or user studies.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills; a Google Scholar link and full publication list are required with the CV.
