Senior Staff Applied Research Scientist (AI/ML)

What you will do

• Define technical strategy and long-term roadmaps for cross-functional, enterprise-scale AI/ML initiatives.
• Identify high-impact insurance use cases and translate business needs into ML problem statements and investment cases.
• Architect end-to-end AI/ML systems covering data acquisition, feature engineering, model development, deployment, monitoring, and governance.
• Lead prototyping, A/B testing, causal inference, productionization, and continuous improvement of AI/ML models.
• Establish KPI frameworks and experimentation strategies to measure portfolio-level business impact.
• Mentor research scientists and engineers, collaborate with product, engineering, legal, security, and operations teams, and present technical strategy to senior leadership.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, machine learning, statistics, mathematics, or a related quantitative field; a PhD is preferred.
• At least 8 years of professional experience delivering applied AI/ML solutions in production and leading enterprise-scale initiatives.
• Deep expertise in statistical learning, machine learning, deep learning, large language models, and research methods.
• Experience with KPI frameworks, experimentation, causal analysis, model governance, responsible AI, and regulated environments.
• Extensive hands-on experience with Python, SQL, PyTorch, TensorFlow, and scikit-learn.
• Must be open to working in Bethesda, Maryland; Palo Alto, California; New York City, New York; or Seattle, Washington.

Nice to have

• Experience with numerical optimization, NLP, reinforcement learning, prompt design, retrieval-augmented generation, red-teaming, and human-in-the-loop workflows.
• Experience building domain-specific GenAI/LLM benchmarks and evaluation suites.
• Experience with insurance operations, patents, publications, or impactful open-source contributions.
