Staff Software Developer, Essentials (Calgary)

Location: Remote-first within commuting distance of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; candidates must be based in Calgary and legally authorized to work in Alberta without additional visa support.

Salary: CAD 180,000–200,000 per year

What you will do

• Build and optimize ingestion, validation, modeling, and reporting workflows processing datasets with hundreds of thousands of records.
• Improve performance through PostgreSQL query planning and indexing, batching, parallelism, memory management, caching, and Redis.
• Design dependable orchestration with queues, scheduling, retries, idempotency, backpressure, and partial-failure handling.
• Build observability for timing, data lineage, intermediate state, and diagnosis of slow or incorrect runs.
• Develop agentic tooling, evaluation harnesses, guardrails, context, verification steps, and human-review points for Essentials workflows.
• Raise standards for testing, performance, agentic development, and technical leadership while mentoring engineers through design and code review.

Requirements

• Staff-level individual contributor with 8+ years of professional hands-on engineering experience.
• Deep experience with complex distributed, service-based systems, failure modes, data consistency, and latency across service boundaries.
• Proven experience improving performance and scale for large-dataset computation, numerical or statistical workloads, or heavy data pipelines without changing results.
• Experience with message systems, queues, workflow orchestration, job scheduling, retries, and resilient long-running workflows.
• Strong experience across several of Python, Go, Node/JavaScript, TypeScript, React, PostgreSQL, NoSQL stores, and Redis.
• Strong integration and end-to-end testing experience, an e2e framework such as Playwright or Cypress, daily use of coding agents, and the autonomy to drive ambiguous work to completion.

Nice to have

• Production experience with AI systems, LLM applications, agent frameworks, retrieval, evaluation harnesses, or model-backed pipelines.
• Background in statistics, data science, quantitative analysis, or regression modeling.
• Experience in domains where correctness, security, privacy, and compliance are critical.
• Experience navigating and improving a large, complex codebase.
