Applied Biodiversity Science Lead

hirify.global Okanagan hosts the role within the Okanagan Institute for Biodiversity, Resilience, and Ecosystem Services, in partnership with Biodiversity Pathways, the Partnerships for Applied Research Centre, and the Wildlife Science Centre.

What you will do

• Lead and support applied wildlife monitoring and biodiversity research projects, including study design, protocol development, field delivery, data collection, and reporting.
• Design, build, and maintain reproducible data pipelines for wildlife monitoring, telemetry, and community-collected biodiversity datasets.
• Conduct statistical analyses using R and/or Python and develop repeatable analytical workflows with strong quality assurance and quality control.
• Use ArcGIS, QGIS, or equivalent GIS platforms for spatial analysis, mapping, and habitat modelling.
• Co-develop monitoring programs with Indigenous communities, government agencies, industry partners, and academic collaborators.
• Prepare technical reports, scientific manuscripts, grant proposals, project budgets, and knowledge-sharing materials for technical and non-technical audiences.

Requirements

• Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline and at least three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Proficiency in at least one programming language for data analysis, with R and/or Python strongly preferred.
• Experience organizing, cleaning, quality-checking, and managing complex ecological or environmental datasets.
• Working knowledge of GIS software such as ArcGIS or QGIS and familiarity with wildlife monitoring methods including camera traps, surveys, telemetry, acoustic monitoring, or ARUs.
• Ability to lead projects independently, coordinate collaborators, track deliverables, communicate scientific information, and prepare funding applications.
• Commitment to respecting diverse perspectives, Indigenous data sovereignty principles, and equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Nice to have

• Graduate degree in wildlife ecology, environmental science, conservation biology, natural resource management, or a related discipline; an M.Sc. or Ph.D. is an asset.
• Experience with Indigenous communities, government, or industry partners in collaborative research or monitoring.
• Familiarity with GitHub or other version-control tools and reproducible analytical workflows.
• Knowledge of habitat selection models, occupancy models, machine learning, or remote sensing applied to ecological data.
