Senior Software Engineer, Data Platform - Libson

Location: Lisbon, Portugal; candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to the Lisbon area and attend the office 3–4 days per week.

What you will do

• Build and maintain data infrastructure processing petabytes of data across millions of users.
• Develop clean, well-tested systems for data ingestion, transformation, and serving.
• Own projects end to end, from design and deployment through production support.
• Collaborate with data scientists, engineers, and product teams on solutions that power Discord’s insights.
• Challenge unnecessary complexity and deliver appropriately scoped solutions.
• Mentor teammates through code reviews, RFCs, and technical knowledge sharing.

Requirements

• 5+ years of software engineering experience with strong programming skills in Python, Java, Rust, Go, or a similar language.
• Hands-on experience with large-scale data infrastructure, including pipelines, streaming systems, orchestration, or data warehousing.
• Experience with technologies such as BigQuery, Kafka, Spark, Flink, Airflow, Dagster, or similar tools.
• Proven ability to deliver complex, multi-phase projects independently and handle edge cases, failure modes, and scale.
• Strong collaboration and communication skills, including technical documentation and cross-functional alignment.

• Familiarity with data governance, privacy compliance, or cost optimization in large-scale data environments.
