Optics R&D Technician Intern

What you will do

• Collaborate with engineers, physicists, and technicians to advance trapped-ion quantum computing technologies.
• Help establish a new optics and photonics laboratory, including optical, mechanical, electronics, and other technical systems.
• Design, build, test, and align optical systems such as lasers and imaging systems.
• Support laboratory planning, development, maintenance, facilities management, equipment procurement, and materials tracking.
• Troubleshoot laboratory and equipment issues, implement corrective actions, and prepare engineering specifications, operating procedures, and maintenance documentation.
• Partner with Environment, Health and Safety and Facilities teams while monitoring laboratory conditions such as temperature and humidity.

Requirements

• Must be enrolled in a quantum technician training program before the internship.
• Must be graduating from or completing the technical training program in 2027 or later.
• Must be a U.S. Person: a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or green card holder, or a person granted asylum or refugee status.
• Due to national security requirements, Chinese or Russian nationals must also be U.S. citizens.
• Ability to lift 25 pounds and work in a laboratory environment.
• Optics laboratory experience, hands-on optical systems work, experimental apparatus construction, technical documentation, and proficiency with Excel, Word, and Outlook are valued.

Nice to have

• Two or more years of optics laboratory experience.
• Five or more years of technical experience, including degree-related experience.
• Experience with mechanical design or CAD systems.
• Interest in certifications or licenses related to hazardous materials, laser safety, or facility safety.
