Principal / Lead Geotechnical Engineer

Location: Hybrid in Birmingham, United Kingdom; projects may span Ireland and wider European regions.

What you will do

• Lead geotechnical input across industrial projects, covering site characterisation, foundation design, earthworks, ground improvement, retaining structures, settlement assessments, and geotechnical risk management.
• Review and challenge geotechnical analyses, numerical models, design outputs, reports, and technical documentation.
• Provide geotechnical design support from due diligence, planning, and permitting through detailed design and on-site construction.
• Collaborate with civil and structural engineering teams, clients, contractors, and multidisciplinary project stakeholders.
• Resolve ground-related construction issues and provide practical, buildable solutions.
• Manage, mentor, and develop design personnel while maintaining high standards for safety, quality, environmental performance, and technical delivery.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology, or a related discipline.
• Chartered status with Engineers Ireland or an equivalent professional body.
• Minimum 15 years of postgraduate experience in engineering or geotechnical consultancy.
• Deep expertise in geology, ground investigation design and interpretation, geotechnical modelling, earthworks, and advanced geotechnical design.
• Experience delivering geotechnical design for large industrial projects, with strong analytical, communication, leadership, and stakeholder-management skills.
• Strong knowledge of Eurocode 7, relevant international standards, slope stability, settlement modelling, foundation design, and soil-structure interaction.

Nice to have

• Experience with pharmaceutical, semiconductor, food, energy, or data centre developments.
