Staff Backend Engineer - Grafana Second Horizon (AI)

Location: Remote, with applicants based in the United Kingdom, Spain, Sweden, Ireland, or Germany

Base compensation: GBP 103,958–124,750 per year in the United Kingdom; compensation and benefits may vary by country.

What you will do

• Design, implement, test, and operate backend services for context ingestion, indexing, retrieval orchestration, API access, source configuration, and administration.
• Build the multi-tenant SaaS foundation, including tenant isolation, usage tracking, quotas, audit logs, background jobs, and reliable service boundaries.
• Create APIs and service interfaces for AI agents, MCP tools, CLIs, and internal applications to retrieve context, provenance, confidence signals, and warnings.
• Instrument services with metrics, logs, traces, alerts, and dashboards, using observability data to improve reliability.
• Shape architecture, storage choices, API contracts, deployment patterns, and engineering practices while moving the initiative from prototype to production.
• Work autonomously across product and infrastructure, making pragmatic decisions and contributing to technical direction.

Requirements

• Strong experience building production-grade, user-facing software systems and delivering software actively used by customers.
• Practical experience with AI technologies, LLMs, prompt engineering, and applications powered by generative AI.
• Experience working in cloud-native environments such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
• Experience using observability tools to understand and troubleshoot system behavior.
• Ability to iterate quickly, work through ambiguity, make architectural decisions, communicate clearly, and take ownership.
• Applicants must be located in the United Kingdom, Spain, Sweden, Ireland, or Germany.

Nice to have

• Experience with agent frameworks or multi-agent workflows.
• Experience as a data analyst or with data platforms such as Looker, Tableau, Power BI, Snowflake, or Databricks.
• Experience building tools for data engineering.
