TL;DR
Freelance Consultant / SME (Mine Ventilation, Fire and Emergency Response Specialist) - Metals & Mining (underground mining): Reviewing and improving ventilation, atmospheric hazard, fire prevention, evacuation, and emergency response procedures for a major mining expansion project with an accent on translating engineering requirements and Critical Controls into practical field procedures. Focus on evaluating ventilation failures, post-blast re-entry, smoke propagation, refuge and escape strategies, emergency communications, and operational risk controls.

Location: Remote role associated with São Paulo, Brazil; Santiago, Chile; and Lima, Peru

What you will do

  • Review underground mine ventilation procedures, standards, management systems, surveys, monitoring practices, and atmospheric testing requirements.
  • Assess primary, secondary, and auxiliary ventilation, post-blast ventilation, re-entry procedures, ventilation failures, alarms, and abnormal atmospheric conditions.
  • Review fire prevention, detection, smoke propagation, evacuation, refuge chamber, escape route, and emergency communication procedures.
  • Support the development and validation of emergency preparedness, response, operational, and safety procedures.
  • Identify gaps between engineering requirements and operational execution, then provide recommendations to strengthen risk controls.
  • Facilitate workshops with engineering, operations, maintenance, emergency response, safety, contractor, and leadership stakeholders.

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of experience in underground mining operations.
  • At least 5 years of direct experience with underground mine ventilation, including system design, operation, commissioning, optimization, or management.
  • Practical experience with ventilation surveys, underground atmospheric conditions, emergency preparedness, emergency response, technical reviews, audits, or risk evaluations.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Fluency in English required; strong technical writing and stakeholder facilitation skills.
  • Ability to translate technical calculations and ventilation designs into procedures, monitoring requirements, operating limits, emergency responses, and stop-work criteria.

Nice to have

  • Specialized training or postgraduate qualification in Mine Ventilation.
  • Professional registration or equivalent certification, where applicable.
  • Experience with mine development, operational readiness, expansion, or ramp-up projects.
  • Portuguese and/or Spanish language skills.
