Freelance Consultant / SME (Underground Geotechnical and Ground Control Specialist) (Metals & Mining)

Location: Remote, with preferred locations in São Paulo, Brazil; Lima, Peru; or Santiago, Chile

What you will do

• Review and evaluate Ground Control procedures, standards, management plans, and underground excavation processes.
• Assess excavation classification, clearance, re-entry, scaling, loose-rock management, and unsupported-ground controls.
• Evaluate ground support design, installation, verification, and maintenance, including rock bolts, cable bolts, mesh, and shotcrete.
• Review monitoring, hazard reporting, and Trigger Action Response Plans for geotechnical risks.
• Identify gaps between engineering requirements and field execution, then define practical inspection, authorization, verification, and stop-work controls.
• Facilitate workshops and provide recommendations to geotechnical, operational, safety, contractor, and leadership stakeholders.

Requirements

• At least 10 years of experience in geotechnical engineering, Ground Control, or a closely related discipline.
• Preferably 7 or more years of experience in underground mining operations, including mine development, expansion, construction, operational readiness, or ramp-up.
• Experience developing, reviewing, or implementing Ground Control standards, procedures, and management systems.
• Experience conducting technical reviews, audits, operational assessments, or risk reviews in mining environments.
• Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Geology, Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related discipline; professional registration or equivalent certification where applicable.
• Fluent English is required. Portuguese and/or Spanish are advantageous.

Nice to have

• Postgraduate qualification in Mining Geotechnics, Rock Mechanics, or Ground Control.
• Experience working in contractor-intensive mining environments.
• Professional fluency in Portuguese or Spanish.
