Assistant Controller

Location: Remote from the United States. Applicants must have legal authorization to work in their country of residence. Employment visa sponsorship is not available.

What you will do

• Build and own the accounting function from 0 to 1, including monthly, quarterly, and annual close.
• Direct the outsourced bookkeeping relationship initially and bring close, bookkeeping, and AP execution in-house over time.
• Prepare GAAP-compliant financial statements, analyze balance sheet and P&L movements, and investigate variances.
• Own AR, collections, invoicing, payment application, aging, AP oversight, vendor management, and approval workflows.
• Manage revenue recognition for subscription and services revenue, including contract modifications and complex billing structures.
• Own finance systems, equity administration, treasury support, tax and compliance coordination, payroll accounting, investor and lender reporting, and audit readiness.

Requirements

• Prior experience as a Controller, strong Assistant Controller, or Accounting Manager ready to run the function independently.
• Experience building or materially maturing an accounting function, including processes, controls, and documentation.
• Deep knowledge of U.S. GAAP and ASC 606 revenue recognition for subscription and services revenue.
• Ability to own the close independently and reason through nonstandard revenue and accounting scenarios.
• Business-partner mindset with the ability to assess accounting and cash implications in contracts, compensation changes, and operational decisions.
• Clear communication, self-direction, and comfort working in a remote, asynchronous, high-autonomy environment.

Nice to have

• Experience with Campfire or comparable modern GL and finance systems such as Ramp, Rippling, or NetSuite.
• Experience building a startup accounting function from the ground up.
• Experience with hybrid subscription and services revenue models.
• Experience insourcing accounting previously handled by an external bookkeeping firm.
• Experience with a first audit or institutional financing round.
