Principal Data Scientist (NLP + Applied AI)

What you will do

• Design and build production NLP enrichment pipelines for scientific full-text at scale.
• Extract entities, classifications, claims, and summaries for downstream agentic applications.
• Compare classical NLP, embeddings, retrieval, prompting, and fine-tuned models using evaluation, cost, and operational trade-offs.
• Build golden evaluation sets, select metrics, and balance quality, speed, and cost.
• Write production-quality Python and manage concurrency and cost for high-volume LLM workloads.
• Collaborate with data engineers on reliable, idempotent, and retryable Airflow and Dagster pipeline stages.

Requirements

• Several years of production Python experience at scale, including concurrency trade-offs between asyncio, threads, and queues.
• Strong experience with modern and classical NLP, including LLMs, transformers, embeddings, retrieval, NER, classification, and sequence labeling.
• Experience designing evaluations and using results to select approaches and manage performance drift.
• Track record of shipping production systems that deliver value to users.
• Ability to work with editors, product managers, engineers, and data engineers on modeling and product decisions.

Nice to have

• Experience with scientific or scholarly text.
• Familiarity with AWS services including S3, Batch, Lambda, and SageMaker.
• Experience with Parquet or Iceberg data lake patterns.
• Experience running LLMs within production cost and latency budgets.
• Exposure to agentic AI, tool use, multi-step reasoning, guardrails, and trajectory evaluation.
