Staff Software Engineer (AI)

What you will do

• Design and own highly available, fault-tolerant, scalable architecture for AI-powered features across the Mercury and Hamster engineering teams.
• Build reliable systems on top of stochastic, LLM-based systems by diagnosing failures, quantifying cost and reliability, and creating reproducible evaluation harnesses.
• Mentor engineers across two teams and improve code quality and AI-assisted engineering practices.
• Align architecture decisions with technical peers across the organization.
• Lead incident investigations and root-cause analysis, contribute to hiring and interviews, and improve how AI-powered features are evaluated.

Requirements

• Staff-level experience owning highly available, fault-tolerant, scalable system architecture.
• Strong daily professional use of AI coding tools as a core part of software development.
• Fluency in engineering reliable systems based on stochastic, LLM-driven technology, including failure diagnosis, cost and reliability measurement, and reproducible evaluation harnesses.
• Ability to mentor engineers, influence architecture across teams, and quickly become productive in unfamiliar stacks.
• Curiosity, growth mindset, and active awareness of evolving AI tooling.
