Backend System Architect (AI)

Location: San Francisco office; in-person work five days per week

What you will do

• Design, build, and operate reliable backend services and APIs.
• Own technical projects from initial architecture through production deployment and ongoing operation.
• Build systems that process high volumes of events, experiments, and customer data.
• Improve platform interoperability, reliability, performance, observability, and scalability.
• Make architectural decisions that balance speed, simplicity, and long-term maintainability.
• Collaborate with product, customer-facing, and applied AI teams to create reusable platform capabilities and establish engineering standards.

Requirements

• 3+ years of experience building and operating backend systems in production.
• Strong software engineering fundamentals and experience designing distributed or data-intensive systems.
• Proficiency in Python or another modern backend language.
• Experience building APIs, services, databases, and asynchronous workflows.
• Ownership of meaningful technical projects from conception through production.
• Strong judgment in system design, reliability, technical tradeoffs, communication, and collaboration.

Nice to have

• Experience at an early-stage or high-growth startup.
• Familiarity with AWS, Kubernetes, Docker, Kafka, and Postgres.
• Familiarity with evaluation systems, observability, orchestration, or distributed task execution.
• Experience with systems where correctness, latency, and reliability directly affect customer experience.
