AI/ML Data Engineer (AI/ML, Vector Databases, RAG): Architecting and operating enterprise-scale AI data platforms for vector search, semantic retrieval, RAG, and agentic AI systems with an accent on data lineage, source attribution, traceability, explainability, and evaluation. Focus on designing secure cloud-native distributed systems, establishing governance and observability controls, and leading production AI platform architecture in mission environments.
Location: Onsite in Reston, Virginia; applicants must currently reside in the United States.
Salary: $151,745–$227,617 per year.

What you will do
- Architect and evolve enterprise AI data platforms supporting vector search, semantic retrieval, RAG, and agentic workflows.
- Design secure, scalable, reliable, and cost-efficient cloud-native distributed data systems.
- Establish controls for data quality, lineage, provenance, source attribution, prompt and context traceability, auditability, explainability, and AI output evaluation.
- Partner with Data Science, ML Engineering, Software, Cybersecurity, and Enterprise Architecture teams to deliver production-grade AI capabilities.
- Lead architectural decisions, drive platform reuse, and implement monitoring, observability, alerting, and operational excellence practices.
- Mentor engineers, raise engineering standards, and evaluate emerging vector databases, retrieval frameworks, and AI evaluation technologies.
Requirements
- Active Top Secret / SCI clearance with Polygraph is mandatory.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or Data Science, or equivalent experience.
- 20+ years of experience in software engineering, data engineering, distributed systems, cloud architecture, or AI/ML platform development.
- Enterprise-scale AI/ML, GenAI, or agentic systems delivery experience, including production cloud-native data platforms.
- Expertise in Python and SQL, with strong software engineering practices.
- Deep experience with AWS, Azure, or GCP; distributed systems, cloud-native architecture, MLOps, platform engineering, vector databases, embeddings, retrieval systems, RAG, CI/CD, orchestration, infrastructure automation, and observability.
Nice to have
- Prior experience as a Principal Engineer, Lead Data Engineer, Solutions Architect, or Technical Lead.
- Experience building or operating enterprise vector search, knowledge management, RAG, or LLM platforms.
- Large-scale distributed processing experience with technologies such as Spark, Flink, or Beam.
- Experience in government, defense, intelligence, or highly regulated environments.
- Familiarity with AI governance, evaluation frameworks, explainability, and responsible AI.
