Principal Software Engineer (Java)

Location: Remote in the U.S. or based in the Bay Area; periodic travel required. Valid authorization to work in the U.S. is required.

Salary: $150,000–$226,000 annually. Pay transparency range: $204,000–$255,000 USD.

What you will do

• Design, develop, deploy, and maintain critical backend software in a Java environment.
• Design and implement scalable software solutions for the Software Engineering Insights product.
• Write functional specifications and design documents for new features.
• Own key system components and ensure delivered software quality through peer reviews and iterative development.
• Diagnose and troubleshoot complex issues in distributed computing and production environments.
• Work with Site Reliability Engineering, DevOps, and cross-functional teams on deployments and production issues.

Requirements

• 12+ years of experience developing highly scalable distributed applications, products, and backend services using Java.
• Deep understanding of building and deploying distributed, resilient software.
• Experience with relational databases such as MySQL and PostgreSQL.
• Strong problem-solving, debugging, and software design skills.
• Experience working in short release cycles and agile development environments.
• U.S. work authorization is required.

Nice to have

• SQL query tuning and performance optimization experience.
• Experience with Elasticsearch or Solr.
• Experience with AWS, Azure, or GCP-hosted applications.
• Familiarity with Docker and CI/CD processes.
