Lead Software Engineer (Java)

Location: Portland, Oregon, USA; the posting is marked as remote and supports a flexible workforce model.

Salary: $186,000–$233,000 USD base pay, plus eligibility for a corporate bonus plan.

What you will do

• Set technical direction for data-ingest systems and make tradeoffs across performance, maintainability, and operational cost.
• Own complex multi-engineer projects from design through general availability.
• Build and ship production code in Java alongside the team, including LLM-assisted development practices where appropriate.
• Lead architecture and design reviews for high-throughput distributed systems using Kubernetes, Kafka, and cell-based architecture.
• Mentor engineers through code reviews, technical feedback, and career development.
• Own CI/CD, observability, incident response, documentation, and operational health for the systems led.

Requirements

• 7–10 years of professional software engineering experience, including 2+ years leading a team or major technical initiative.
• Deep experience with Java or a comparable object-oriented language.
• Experience operating stateful distributed services under unpredictable production load and leading incident remediation.
• Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure, CI/CD tools such as Argo CD, event-driven architectures such as Kafka, and container orchestration such as Kubernetes.
• Experience with data modeling and query optimization for relational databases at scale.
• Strong technical communication, mentoring, and stakeholder-management skills.

Nice to have

• Infrastructure-as-code experience with Terraform, CloudFormation, or similar tools across multiple environments and cloud providers.
• Experience with time-series or telemetry data and query languages such as NRQL or PromQL.
• Formal SRE experience with SLOs, error budgets, capacity planning, or chaos testing.
• Secure-by-default design, OWASP familiarity, or experience with Snyk and SonarQube.
• Open-source contributions.
