Senior Software Engineer, Backend (Consumer Data Platform)

Location: Remote within Canada, limited to candidates residing in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, or Saskatchewan

Base pay: CAD 153,000–213,000 per year, plus potential equity, stipends, and benefits.

What you will do

• Plan and prioritize projects according to product, technical, and business goals using data-driven decision-making.
• Design and build scalable backend systems, APIs, and data models for communications, experimentation, and personalization.
• Partner with Product Managers, Data Scientists, Analysts, and Design teams on customer acquisition and engagement strategies.
• Establish engineering practices that keep services secure, observable, reliable, and performant at scale.
• Create and monitor operational metrics, escalate issues, and support on-call and keep-the-lights-on activities.
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to technical learning and collaboration.

Requirements

• 6+ years of software engineering experience focused on backend systems.
• Strong knowledge of distributed systems, service-oriented architecture, scalability, reliability, and maintainability.
• Production experience delivering complex backend systems.
• Proficiency in Python, Kotlin, or similar languages; experience with both Python and Kotlin is a plus.
• Experience with AWS or another major cloud provider, experimentation platforms, event-driven architecture, and stream processing tools such as Kafka or Kinesis.
• Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent practical experience, with strong written, verbal, and asynchronous communication skills.

Nice to have

• Experience with large-scale personalization, recommendation, or messaging systems.
• Experience with both Python and Kotlin.
