Metallurgist (Automotive)

What you will do

• Conduct metallographic evaluations and mechanical tests on incoming materials, in-process parts, finished products, and samples from new powder vendors.
• Set up and execute fatigue, wear, corrosion, creep, stress, rupture, hardness, impact, and other specialized tests.
• Analyze furnace performance, test data, metal and alloy behavior, and microstructural defects; prepare technical reports.
• Perform failure analysis, troubleshoot processes, and recommend corrective actions for laboratory and production issues.
• Manage continuous-improvement and scrap-reduction projects using core tools and problem-solving methodologies.
• Supervise metallurgical and quality technicians, maintain laboratory equipment and records, and represent the organization in technical and customer-related matters.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of heat-treating experience, or a combination of heat-treating experience and technical education in materials science or a related field.
• Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in materials science or a related field is preferred.
• Hands-on experience operating, adjusting, and modifying metallurgical laboratory equipment.
• Practical experience in a metallurgical laboratory and understanding of quality management systems.
• Strong knowledge of metallurgical and mechanical test methods, with familiarity with powder metallurgy and specialized testing techniques.
• Additional education or experience in ferrous metallurgy is highly preferred.
