TL;DR
Process Control Engineer II (Water Treatment/Process Controls): Supporting the design and delivery of advanced water treatment systems, including control specifications, PLC/HMI integration, instrumentation, commissioning, and project documentation with an accent on process controls, water treatment engineering, and field implementation. Focus on coordinating detailed designs, reviewing control programs and panel drawings, solving operational issues, and supporting startup, testing, and troubleshooting across multiple projects.

Location: San Diego, California, USA office; availability for 25% domestic travel and onsite field work required

Salary: $80,000–$110,000 annual compensation, plus an annual discretionary bonus

What you will do

  • Support process control designs for advanced water treatment systems across 2–3 simultaneous projects.
  • Create functional specifications, control narratives, sequence-of-operation charts, instrument specifications, I/O lists, control tables, and alarm lists.
  • Support PLC, HMI, VFD, and SCADA integration, including program review, testing, documentation, and customer system integration.
  • Coordinate control requirements with design teams, vendors, customers, fabrication partners, and contractors.
  • Assist with electrical, process, mechanical, piping, pump, heat-transfer, and instrumentation design activities.
  • Support pilot testing, factory acceptance testing, construction oversight, startup, commissioning, troubleshooting, QA/QC, and project documentation turnover.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical, process, mechanical, environmental engineering, or a related field; chemical engineering preferred.
  • 2–7 years of professional experience in process, chemical, or controls engineering, preferably in environmental remediation, water treatment, or air treatment.
  • Knowledge of control hardware and software, process drawings, water chemistry, process engineering, heat transfer, fluids, thermodynamics, and automated treatment systems.
  • Experience with controlled engineering documents, drawing and specification registers, revision histories, technical writing, and project documentation.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to the office and job sites.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, communication, interpersonal, and attention-to-detail skills.

Nice to have

  • Experience with Rockwell Automation/Allen Bradley Studio 5000 or Siemens STEP 7 TIA Portal.
  • Professional Registration eligibility or a passed FE Exam.
  • Master’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • AutoCAD drafting experience.
