Senior Combat Designer (Unreal Engine) - Freelance

Location: Europe, fully remote; core working hours are 10am–4pm CET.

What you will do

• Develop and refine core combat systems for a Soulslike game.
• Design, prototype, implement, balance, and ship enemy archetypes and bosses.
• Polish combat at a micro level, including animation timing, invulnerability frames, hitboxes, and frame data.
• Implement character combat behaviours with Unreal Engine Behaviour Trees, Animation Graphs, and Blueprints.
• Collaborate with gameplay programmers, level design, art, animation, VFX, audio, and production teams.
• Use playtest results to identify issues, improve gameplay quality, and support the product through shipping.

Requirements

• 5+ years of game design experience, including several years in combat design or a comparable role.
• Deep passion for and expertise in the Soulslike genre.
• Strong knowledge of gameplay mechanics, game features, and modern game design.
• Familiarity with Unreal Engine and experience creating Blueprints.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work creatively under pressure and meet deadlines.

Nice to have

• Experience shipping at least one AAA title in a design capacity.
