Senior Database Engineer (Azure SQL): Owning and optimizing a multi-tenant Azure SQL estate for a hybrid SaaS environment with an accent on performance engineering, cost attribution, resilience, and developer enablement. Focus on analyzing execution plans, improving index hygiene, managing noisy-neighbour effects, validating disaster recovery, and shaping sharding and event-driven decomposition strategies.

What you will do
- Own the Azure SQL estate across cost optimization, resource allocation, performance, and database observability.
- Analyze execution plans and query response times, improve index hygiene, and address noisy-neighbour and abusive API usage patterns.
- Own backup and restore validation, disaster-recovery testing, high availability, patching, lifecycle management, privileged access, and database security in partnership with Cloud & SRE.
- Advise engineering teams on data solutions, microservices, ORMs, and prevention of data-layer debt.
- Contribute to sharding, multi-tenancy, streaming, and event-driven decomposition decisions.
- Establish cost-per-service and cost-per-tenant attribution and reduce dependency on external database consultants.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of hands-on experience as a Database Administrator, Database Engineer, or Performance Specialist in Microsoft SQL Server environments.
- Deep current expertise in Microsoft SQL Server, especially Azure SQL Managed Instances and related services.
- Proven API-scale performance tuning experience with index optimization, execution-plan analysis, query tuning, locking, and concurrency.
- Strong knowledge of elastic pools, resource sharing, noisy-neighbour management, and multi-tenant SaaS.
- Experience advising on multi-tenancy trade-offs and working with Jooq, JPA, and custom persistence frameworks.
- Consultative communication skills and the ability to help engineering teams ship code-level fixes.
