Software Engineer I - Backend (Java)

Location: Amsterdam, Netherlands; candidates must currently be based in the Netherlands. Hybrid working is available, with flexible arrangements and up to 20 days per year working from abroad in the home country.

What you will do

• Develop robust and scalable backend services, internal systems, and infrastructure.
• Optimize applications for performance and scalability.
• Collaborate with developers and cross-functional teams to create cohesive, functional code.
• Manage code repositories and branching strategies using Git.
• Develop and maintain containerized applications with Kubernetes and write Perl scripts.
• Integrate automated testing and deployment processes.

Requirements

• 1–3 years of software development experience with one or more server-side programming languages.
• Experience with MySQL, PostgreSQL, or similar relational databases.
• Strong knowledge of Git and branching strategies.
• Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, communication, and collaboration skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with eagerness to learn new technologies.
• A bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or an equivalent qualification is preferred.

Nice to have

• Experience with distributed systems and products serving a large customer base.
• Java with Spring and Hibernate.
• Kubernetes, Perl scripting, and CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, GitLab CI, or CircleCI.
