Photonic Integrated Circuit Design Intern

Location: On-site in Broomfield, Colorado; additional location listed in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Candidates must be U.S. Persons, defined as U.S. citizens, permanent residents or green card holders, or individuals granted asylum or refugee status.

What you will do

• Support physicists and optical engineers developing commercial and research quantum-computing systems.
• Design and develop integrated photonic components and systems for delivering and manipulating light across the spectrum.
• Apply photonic simulation and layout tools to develop photonic integrated circuits.
• Contribute to photonic fabrication, packaging, testing, and data analysis activities.
• Collaborate with architecture, physics, fabrication, mechanical engineering, and photonics specialists.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in a Physics or Engineering PhD program and intending to graduate in September 2027 or later.
• Must be a U.S. Person and must not be a People's Republic of China national or Russian national unless also a U.S. citizen.
• Three or more years of experience, including advanced-degree experience, with photonic integrated circuit design.
• Experience with photonic simulation and layout tools such as Lumerical, RSoft, Klayout, or GDSFactory.
• Programming experience in Matlab, Python, or C, plus optical testing and data-analysis experience.
• Must intend to return to the degree program after completing the internship or co-op.

Nice to have

• Experience with adjoint optimization, inverse design, design-for-manufacturing, photonics fabrication, and metrology.
• Knowledge of materials used in visible photonics circuits and optics.
• Experience developing, fabricating, or packaging PIC systems.
• Broad knowledge of optical principles and experience applying them to projects.
