Staff Software Engineer (Backend)

Location: Sunnyvale, California, United States; Home Office

Salary: $143,000–$286,000 annually, plus performance-based bonuses and potential stock compensation.

What you will do

• Design and build scalable, resilient, highly available backend services for a multi-tenant last-mile delivery platform.
• Shape the platform’s technical direction and establish reusable architectural patterns, frameworks, configuration tools, and non-functional standards.
• Create and drive high-level and low-level designs, prototypes, and cloud-based technical solutions.
• Collaborate with Product Management, Business, architects, and engineering teams across cloud, platform, analytics, and international markets.
• Guide teams in solution delivery, technical modernization, quality, cost, delivery, and DevOps practices.
• Participate in hiring and help build high-performing Agile teams.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or a related area and 4 years of software engineering experience, or 6 years of software engineering experience.
• 10+ years of experience designing and developing highly scalable distributed applications and platforms, particularly multi-tenant SaaS products.
• Experience building Code, Deploy, Run pipelines using DevOps best practices and CI/CD tools.
• Experience with Kafka and messaging methodologies.
• Strong computer science fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, and design patterns.
• Proficiency in Java/J2EE, microservices, and cloud-native architecture, including hands-on Java Spring Boot, Spring Kafka, or equivalent RESTful web services development.
• Knowledge of cloud-native and microservice architecture, service registries, ELK/Splunk, virtual machines, Docker, Kubernetes, and at least one of Azure or Google Cloud Platform.
• End-to-end ownership of at least one cloud-based project and strong hands-on skills for prototyping technical solutions.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities, adapt to change, drive technical change, and work with emerging technologies.
• Exceptional communication, negotiation, facilitation, consensus-building, influencing, and persuading skills without direct control; experience practicing Agile Scrum.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or a related area and 2 years of software engineering experience.
• Experience creating inclusive digital experiences and implementing WCAG 2.2 AA standards, assistive technologies, and digital accessibility best practices.
