Location: 100% remote within the United States. Workdays must begin between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. Pacific Time, regardless of U.S. location. The role supports the U.S. Geological Survey and requires completion of U.S. Government Public Trust suitability requirements and the ability to obtain and maintain required credentials, including a PIV card.
Salary: $100,000–$140,000 annually.

What you will do
- Administer, maintain, patch, configure, and troubleshoot Linux production, development, test, and supporting infrastructure.
- Investigate complex system and application issues using logs, monitoring data, configuration, network behavior, application code, and database activity.
- Perform root-cause analysis, resolve issues directly when possible, and coordinate escalation with developers, network engineers, security specialists, and other technical teams.
- Support security hardening, vulnerability remediation, access controls, host firewalls, compliance changes, and operational procedures.
- Maintain automation, configuration management, monitoring checks, scripts, and lightweight operational tooling.
- Support relational databases, messaging infrastructure, connectivity troubleshooting, and systems where applications, networks, databases, and infrastructure interact.
Requirements
- Strong hands-on Linux systems administration experience in enterprise or production environments.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex technical problems independently and perform root-cause analysis.
- Experience with Linux services, processes, logs, filesystems, permissions, packages, configuration, patching, monitoring, and operational support.
- Hands-on scripting or automation experience; ability to read application or automation code for troubleshooting.
- Working knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS, ports, protocols, routing, firewalls, relational databases, SQL, and system security concepts.
- Must reside and work within the United States, meet Government Public Trust suitability requirements, obtain required credentials including a PIV card, and work Pacific Time morning hours.
Nice to have
- Experience with RHEL, Rocky Linux, Python, Bash, PostgreSQL, Ansible, Nagios, Prometheus, Grafana, NATS, ActiveMQ, RabbitMQ, or Kafka.
- Knowledge of SELinux, Linux host firewalls, DISA STIGs, FISMA, vulnerability remediation, federal or regulated environments, AWS, CI/CD, Git, or GitLab.
- Approximately five or more years of relevant experience in Linux administration, infrastructure operations, systems engineering, production support, or technical operations.
