TL;DR
Propulsion Design Intern (Aerospace): Supporting the design and analysis of components and subassemblies for the Archimedes rocket engine with an accent on propulsion hardware, engineering analysis, and multidisciplinary development. Focus on applying fluid dynamics, heat transfer, structural fundamentals, CAD, and analysis tools to solve real engineering challenges in an on-site internship.

Location: Long Beach, California, United States; full-time, on-site for at least 12 consecutive weeks beginning January, February, or March 2027.

Salary: $28 USD per hour in California.

What you will do

  • Support the design and analysis of components and subassemblies for the Archimedes engine.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary propulsion team developing and building engine system hardware.
  • Apply engineering and industry concepts to solve practical technical challenges.
  • Work with a mentor and department colleagues while providing progress updates through regular 1:1 meetings.
  • Participate in technical talks and professional events with interns and employees.

Requirements

  • Be enrolled in a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral program in aerospace, astronautical, aeronautical, or mechanical engineering.
  • Have at least one semester remaining after the internship.
  • Have a GPA of 3.0 or above.
  • Have at least 3 months of applied engineering experience, including internships, laboratory work, or personal and team projects.
  • Be able to work full-time on-site in Long Beach for a minimum of 12 consecutive weeks.
  • For U.S. office work, meet applicable ITAR eligibility or authorization requirements.

Nice to have

  • GPA of 3.5 or above and at least 6 months of applied engineering experience.
  • Siemens NX, ANSYS Workbench, CAD/CAM, or Python experience.
  • Experience with fluid dynamics, fluid systems, liquid rocket engines, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, or structural fundamentals.
