Principal Software Engineer (AI/ML)

Location: Bentonville, Arkansas, United States; onsite work at the Walmart home office

Salary: $110,000–$220,000 annually, plus performance bonuses and possible stock compensation

What you will do

• Lead platform engineering efforts for scalable, cloud-native infrastructure and reusable tooling.
• Drive the full software development lifecycle across multiple teams, including high availability, fault tolerance, real-time data processing, testing, CI/CD, and incident response.
• Architect and integrate AI-enhanced applications using model-driven design and modern programming languages.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship while influencing architectural standards and engineering practices.
• Translate business needs into technical requirements and measurable success metrics with cross-functional partners.
• Maintain architectural documentation and improve the quality, reliability, and operational excellence of software solutions.

Requirements

• Extensive experience in platform engineering leadership, scalable infrastructure, and reusable tooling.
• Expertise in cloud-native architecture and distributed systems designed for high availability and fault tolerance.
• Experience integrating AI/ML and building intelligent software systems with Python, Java, or C++.
• At least 5 years of software engineering experience with a relevant bachelor's degree, or 7 years of software engineering experience without the degree requirement.
• Experience with technical mentorship, architectural decision-making, cross-functional collaboration, and communicating complex technical concepts.
• Work is associated with the Bentonville, Arkansas home office and in-person collaboration.

Nice to have

• Master's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or a related area.
• Knowledge of WCAG 2.2 AA, assistive technologies, and digital accessibility best practices.
