Staff Backend Engineer (AI)

Location: Hybrid role based in San Francisco, California, with an expectation of working from the San Francisco FiDi office three days each week. A one-month work-from-anywhere policy is available, except for a few countries.

Salary: $220,000–$285,000 USD annually for San Francisco.

What you will do

• Lead engineering best practices, mentor engineers, and deliver high-impact technical solutions.
• Own systemic, cross-service problems from definition and design through implementation and rollout.
• Design and build identity and access management capabilities, including authentication, authorization, RBAC, and OAuth/OIDC flows.
• Strengthen AWS and cloud infrastructure security, configuration, and operational guardrails.
• Improve performance, security, and optimization across high-volume transactional databases.
• Drive production reliability by hardening APIs and distributed systems, leading incident remediation, addressing root causes, and improving observability.

Requirements

• 6+ years of software engineering experience building precise and scalable distributed systems.
• Strong Java and AWS experience; familiarity with Spring Boot, microservices, Postgres, and Kubernetes.
• Backend-focused engineering experience with the ability to work across the stack.
• Proven experience building and shipping security, scalability, or infrastructure solutions rather than only reviewing them.
• Experience with security-sensitive or highly regulated environments such as fintech or payments is beneficial.
• Strong ownership, communication, resilience, assurance, and creative problem-solving skills.
