Technical Associate – R&D (Microscopy & Materials Analysis) (FIB-SEM and materials characterization): Operating advanced microscopy equipment and preparing material samples to generate analytical data for R&D, technical service, development, and manufacturing teams with an accent on high-resolution imaging, EDS, EBSD, and precision FIB-SEM techniques. Focus on maintaining instrumentation, assessing data quality, managing laboratory safety, and coordinating analytical workflows across second and first shifts.
Location: Wilmington, Delaware, United States; 100% on-site in a laboratory with no remote work options

What you will do
- Prepare diverse material samples using mechanical polishers, plasma and sputter coaters, and precision FIB-SEM milling and lift-out techniques.
- Operate a Focused-Ion Beam Scanning Electron Microscope during the second shift for high-resolution imaging, EDS, and EBSD analysis.
- Assess basic data quality, organize analytical outputs, and compile reports for R&D, technical service, development, and manufacturing customers.
- Perform routine instrument maintenance and troubleshooting according to laboratory procedures.
- Handle and dispose of chemical and laboratory waste in compliance with environmental and institutional protocols.
- Coordinate priorities and handoffs with first-shift operators while meeting tight analytical timelines.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics, Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent relevant hands-on technical training.
- Ability to work 100% on-site in a laboratory environment.
- Ability to work Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week, on a permanent second shift of approximately 4:00 PM–12:30 AM.
- Strong attention to detail, written and verbal communication, collaboration, and adherence to laboratory safety protocols.
- Training will take place during daytime hours, approximately 8:30 AM–5:00 PM, for the first three months.
Nice to have
- Hands-on academic or industrial experience with electron microscopy, including SEM, FIB, or TEM.
- Experience with chemical handling, solution preparation, and laboratory safety.
