Staff Software Engineer - Vehicle AI (Android Automotive OS)

Location: Hybrid attendance is required at least three times per week in Austin, Texas or Mountain View, California, or remotely from Washington State, with frequency determined by business needs.

Salary: $189,300–$290,000 per year, plus bonus potential.

What you will do

• Lead the architecture and development of an in-vehicle AI assistant platform on Android Automotive OS.
• Drive technical execution, roadmaps, code quality standards, and system design practices across engineering teams.
• Design scalable application interfaces, developer-facing APIs, SDKs, and shared libraries for vehicle capabilities and specialized AI tools.
• Build hybrid edge-and-cloud architecture combining low-latency on-device processing with cloud AI/ML services.
• Establish automated testing, CI, validation, benchmarking, and quality feedback infrastructure across vehicle builds.
• Optimize voice and text latency, memory usage, responsiveness, and Android IPC/AIDL application contracts.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
• 8+ years of professional software development experience focused on production Android application architecture.
• Experience as a technical lead driving architecture decisions and software execution across engineering teams.
• Expert knowledge of Kotlin, Java, Android Jetpack, Coroutines, Flow, and Hilt or Dagger.
• Experience designing developer-facing APIs, platform SDKs, automated testing strategies, and CI pipelines for mobile platforms.
• Experience with streaming, gRPC, REST, Android application components, lifecycle management, and IPC/AIDL.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
• Experience building voice assistants, conversational frameworks, or agentic applications.
• Familiarity with Android Automotive OS and client-side or on-device machine learning optimization.
• Experience with AI/ML evaluation pipelines, model benchmarking, and conversational-system validation.
• Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical partners and foster collaborative engineering practices.
