Senior Data Engineer (AI)

Location: Remote from anywhere in the UK or within GMT +/-2 hours; monthly remote and in-person events take place in London.

What you will do

• Build and evolve data foundations for predictive features, adaptive learning, and assessment insights.
• Design, develop, and improve reliable, scalable data pipelines and models.
• Shape the technical direction of the data platform and improve data movement between the application, warehouse, and product surfaces.
• Build clean, tested, reusable solutions with Python, SQL, and dbt while improving data quality, observability, and reliability.
• Partner with product, engineering, commercial, and education teams to turn complex problems into measurable solutions.
• Create self-service data models, tooling, and patterns; mentor engineers and contribute to product features, APIs, internal tools, and automation.

Requirements

• Significant experience designing, building, maintaining, and scaling production data pipelines and platforms.
• Strong Python and SQL skills with a focus on clear, maintainable, well-tested code.
• Understanding of data modelling, database architecture, and reliable, scalable data systems.
• Experience with cloud data warehouses, orchestration tools, and transformation frameworks.
• Ability to take end-to-end ownership, resolve ambiguous requirements, communicate clearly, and collaborate across disciplines.
• Confidence using AI tools and agents for learning, investigation, prototyping, and development.

Nice to have

• Experience with BigQuery, Airflow, dbt, CockroachDB, PostgreSQL, distributed databases, CDC, or event-driven pipelines.
• Knowledge of data visualisation tools such as Tableau or Metabase.
• Experience enabling safe self-service through internal tooling, analytics platforms, or LLM-powered interfaces.
• Experience supporting product analytics or building data-powered product features.
