Software Engineer II - WRF

Location: Boulder, Colorado, United States; hybrid with a minimum of 3 days per week on-site

What you will do

• Maintain, modernize, and refactor software supporting WRF-based operational and research forecasting workflows.
• Migrate legacy plotting scripts to modern Python-based alternatives and optimize data post-processing performance.
• Upgrade WRF and initialization workflows, benchmark changes, and deploy them across high-performance computing environments.
• Troubleshoot model and workflow issues, establish systematic GitHub versioning, and identify memory, compute, and pipeline bottlenecks.
• Maintain operational alerting systems and web-based status dashboards for real-time product monitoring.
• Document WRF ensemble architecture and custom post-processing pipelines while collaborating with university and private-sector partners.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in a computer-related field with typically 4–8 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Professional experience with Python or other scripting languages, shell scripting, Git, and software development for real-time operational systems.
• Experience with high-performance computing systems and Linux/Unix-based operating systems.
• Ability to manage multiple projects, solve complex technical problems, and communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
• Ability to work collaboratively as part of a diverse team.
• Hybrid work in Boulder, Colorado requires on-site presence at least 3 days per week; relocation assistance is not available and the position does not sponsor visas.

Nice to have

• Exposure to NCL and Perl or familiarity with Fortran.
• Knowledge of numerical weather prediction, GRIB and netCDF files, WRF, or the WRF Preprocessing System.
• Basic web development experience for status dashboards.
