Staff Engineer, Retail (m/f/d)

Location: Remote from Germany, with occasional on-site collaboration at offices in Berlin or Cologne depending on business and team requirements.

What you will do

• Provide technical direction across two engineering teams within the Retail Transaction domain.
• Design scalable distributed solutions across frontend and backend for checkout capabilities.
• Build customer-facing web experiences with React and backend services with Java.
• Shape the foundations for future native iOS and Android checkout experiences.
• Drive architecture, performance, security, testing, observability, and reliability practices across teams.
• Align Checkout, Payments, Orders, Shipping, Product, UX, Security, SRE, and engineering stakeholders while mentoring engineers.

Requirements

• Deep hands-on full-stack engineering experience with React and Java.
• Experience taking production ownership across customer-facing frontend applications and backend services.
• Staff, Principal, or equivalent technical scope with experience designing complex distributed systems.
• Experience driving architectural decisions across multiple teams or domains and leading through influence.
• Strong business and product judgment with the ability to use metrics and evidence for technical decisions.
• Ability to work remotely from Germany and attend occasional on-site collaboration in Berlin or Cologne.

Nice to have

• Experience with checkout, payments, orders, e-commerce, or marketplace systems.
• Native Android/Kotlin or iOS/Swift development experience.
