TL;DR
Staff Software Systems Engineer (Autonomy Behavior) (Autonomous Vehicles/Simulation): Building a continuous validation system for autonomous vehicle behavior, connecting requirements, scene definitions, metrics, acceptance criteria, coverage, simulation validity, and release evidence with an accent on safety-critical evaluation and large-scale simulation. Focus on designing traceable validation lifecycles, comparing AV behavior with human and alternate-policy references, and turning complex results into defensible launch and monitoring decisions.

Location: Sunnyvale, California, United States

Salary: $189,300–$290,700 per year, plus bonus potential

Company

hirify.global develops automotive products and autonomous driving technologies with a focus on safer, more sustainable, and equitable mobility.

What you will do

  • Set the systems engineering approach for autonomous behavior validation from product requirements through release and continuous monitoring.
  • Define behavior decomposition, metrics, acceptance criteria, coverage, confidence, traceability, and validation evidence.
  • Lead validation strategies connecting safety claims, legal and compliance expectations, hazard analysis, simulation tests, and release decisions.
  • Set the direction for large-scale evaluation across synthetic tests, road data, and counterfactual references, including scenario sourcing, orchestration, data quality, and reproducibility.
  • Lead cross-functional technical reviews and guide validation tools, data pipelines, simulation workflows, and analysis products toward repeatable systems.
  • Turn complex validation results into clear recommendations for safety and launch decisions.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in systems engineering, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, robotics, or a related field.
  • At least 8 years of professional experience in systems engineering, autonomous vehicles, robotics, vehicle development, simulation, or safety-critical validation.
  • Proven experience evaluating autonomous vehicles for a self-driving fleet, launch, supervised release, or another high-consequence product decision.
  • Strong systems engineering fundamentals, including architecture, use-case and scene modeling, requirements strategy, interface definition, verification and validation planning, and traceability.
  • Professional experience leading simulation evaluation at scale and balancing coverage, confidence, runtime, cost, and simulation validity.
  • Strong Python skills, communication abilities, stakeholder management experience, and a record of leading through influence across organizational boundaries.

Nice to have

  • Experience with human benchmarking, counterfactual simulation analysis, safety cases, safety claims, hazard analysis, STPA, FMEA, fault trees, or scenario-based hazard analysis.
  • Experience with risk quantification, risk acceptance, severity and exposure reasoning, risk budgets, and mitigation decisions.
  • Experience translating legal or regulatory expectations into compliance strategies with requirements, metrics, test coverage, and documented claims.
  • Experience designing validation lifecycles, scorecards, confidence rubrics, behavior protocols, or reusable validation products.
  • Experience automating manual expert review while preserving expert judgment and developing other engineers or technical communities.

Culture & Benefits

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance options.
  • Health Savings Account and Flexible Spending Accounts.
  • Retirement savings plan, life insurance, and sickness and accident benefits.
  • Paid vacation and holidays, tuition assistance, and an employee assistance program.
  • GM vehicle discounts and performance-based incentive compensation.
  • Inclusive workplace focused on belonging, professional development, and safer mobility.
