State and Local Tax Director - Indirect Tax

Salary: $257,140–$337,490 annually in Chicago

What you will do

• Lead strategic state and local tax consulting engagements covering income, franchise, sales and use, payroll, property, and other taxes.
• Manage multi-disciplinary, multi-state reviews to identify filing options, exemptions, credits, incentives, and structures that reduce client tax burdens.
• Research nexus, taxability, and potential liability issues and advise clients on state and local tax controversies and audits.
• Plan and execute due diligence, voluntary disclosure, reverse audit, process review, and other tax projects.
• Prepare technical memoranda and client correspondence, including ruling requests, while maintaining strong client communication.
• Manage engagement staffing, billing, collections, profitability, business development, and team development.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required; a master’s degree in taxation or an LLM is advantageous.
• CPA, JD, CMI, or EA certification required.
• 10+ years of experience in state and local tax.
• 5+ years of supervisory experience, including mentoring and counseling associates, preferred.
• Experience serving clients in a consulting firm preferred, with the ability to lead teams and deliver high-quality work.
• Eligibility to work in the United States without sponsorship is highly preferred.
