Interim CTO / VP Engineering (AI)

Location: Remote, based anywhere in the European Economic Area; occasional travel for workshops and key client moments may be required.

What you will do

• Embed into client organizations as an interim CTO or VP Engineering and own engineering outcomes.
• Own architecture decisions, technical trade-offs, and delivery accountability.
• Hire, restructure, mentor, and develop client engineering teams and cultures of accountability.
• Make economically grounded build, buy, and kill decisions and communicate them to founders, executives, and boards.
• Ship code when necessary and diagnose whether problems are technical, organizational, communicative, or leadership-related.
• Introduce AI-assisted and agentic engineering practices and hand over self-sufficient organizations.

Requirements

• Background as an engineer who grew into senior technical leadership through hands-on delivery.
• Experience making architecture, hiring, organizational, technical debt, and business trade-off decisions.
• Deep software engineering fundamentals across the stack, with practical knowledge of backend systems, data, databases, cloud infrastructure, deployment practices, APIs, queues, PostgreSQL, Kubernetes, and Terraform.
• Hands-on fluency with AI-assisted and agentic software development workflows.
• Fluent English, written and spoken, is required.
• Must be based in the European Economic Area and willing to travel occasionally for client workshops and key moments.
