AI Engineer

Location: Brisbane, Australia; office-based and not a work-from-home position

Salary: AUD 100,000–120,000 per annum

A startup building enterprise-grade AI agents to automate low-level administrative work across its group.

What you will do

• Design, build, deploy, and maintain production agentic systems end to end.
• Build and maintain integrations across business systems using REST APIs, OAuth, webhooks, email, and third-party platforms.
• Own architecture, compute, infrastructure, inference cost, latency, scaling, monitoring, logging, and alerting.
• Establish evaluation and testing practices, manage model and dependency updates, and improve production reliability.
• Guide and review the work of a small technical team while setting engineering standards.
• Advise the Founder on AI strategy, tooling, build-versus-buy decisions, and technical risk.

Requirements

• Production experience delivering agentic systems using platforms such as Claude Agent SDK, MCP, LangGraph, CrewAI, Microsoft Agent Framework, n8n, or comparable tools.
• Strong API and integration skills, including REST, OAuth, webhooks, rate limiting, retry logic, and error handling.
• Experience making decisions about local versus hosted compute, resource sizing, inference cost, latency, and scaling.
• Security-first experience with credential management, permissions, sandboxing, audit logging, personal information, prompt injection, and untrusted inputs.
• Operational discipline across version control, testing, monitoring, documentation, and production updates, plus the ability to guide a technical team.
• Must be able to work in person in Brisbane; this is an office role.

Nice to have

• Experience in a regulated industry or compliance-constrained workflows.
• Exposure to vocational education and training or another Australian regulated services environment.
• Early-stage or founding team experience.
• Full-stack capability with TypeScript, Python, and modern web deployment.
