Staff Software Engineer - Machine Learning (AI/ML)

Location: Hybrid and permanently based in Melbourne or Sydney, Australia

What you will do

• Lead strategically important AI/ML initiatives, shaping architecture, engineering practices, and technical direction.
• Design, build, deploy, and operate end-to-end ML products, pipelines, and services using Python, modern ML frameworks, and AWS.
• Own the production ML lifecycle, including experimentation, versioning, evaluation, deployment, monitoring, and continuous improvement.
• Develop LLM, relevance, retrieval, ranking, and generative AI solutions, including the use and fine-tuning of third-party models, embeddings, and transformers.
• Build data and feature foundations for real-time and batch inference using SQL, Airflow, Kafka, and BigQuery.
• Mentor engineers, guide cross-functional solutions, and promote ethical, compliant, reliable, and maintainable AI/ML systems.

Requirements

• Deep experience delivering production AI/ML systems across machine learning, ML engineering, MLOps, software engineering, and modern LLM-based solutions.
• Experience leading complex technical initiatives from discovery and solution design through planning and delivery.
• Expertise across the full ML lifecycle, including data preparation, training, evaluation, inference, deployment, observability, and optimization.
• High proficiency in Python and SQL, with strong software engineering practices including test automation, CI/CD, and evolutionary architecture.
• Strong technical judgment, stakeholder communication, leadership, mentoring, and cross-disciplinary collaboration skills.
• Strong ownership of production systems, with a focus on reliability, quality, continuous improvement, and ethical data use.
