TL;DR
Senior Mechanisms Engineer (TVC Actuation) (Aerospace): Designing and delivering thrust vector control actuation systems for long-range hypersonic strike vehicles with an accent on electromechanical actuator architecture, high-load mechanism design, and extreme thermal environments. Focus on analyzing dynamic response, building and validating flight hardware, and solving reliability, qualification, and integration challenges.
Location: Torrance, California, or Rio Rancho, New Mexico, United States
Company
develops advanced defense systems, including long-range hypersonic strike vehicles.
What you will do
- Design and develop thrust vector control actuation systems, including actuators, linkages, mounts, and load paths.
- Lead the architecture and detailed design of electromechanical actuator systems with gear trains, bearings, and structural components.
- Analyze loads, stiffness, backlash, bandwidth, dynamic response, tolerances, lubrication, reliability, and service life.
- Integrate TVC systems with propulsion, control electronics, GNC, structures, and the broader vehicle architecture.
- Support prototyping, assembly, hardware bring-up, troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and environmental qualification testing.
- Optimize designs for mass, stiffness, thermal robustness, reliability, and manufacturability while mentoring junior engineers.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience designing mechanisms and actuators for aerospace or other high-performance dynamic systems.
- Strong experience with electromechanical actuators, motor-driven systems, gear reduction, and torque transmission.
- Experience with high-load, high-bandwidth actuation systems such as TVC or control-surface actuation.
- Experience with CAD and analysis tools such as NX, SolidWorks, ANSYS, or equivalent, plus structural, fatigue, life, and tolerance analysis.
- Experience building, testing, and troubleshooting hardware in laboratory or flight-hardware environments, including high-temperature materials and extreme-environment operation.
Nice to have
- Experience with BLDC motor selection, encoders or resolvers, and actuator feedback integration.
- Experience defining vibration, thermal, and shock qualification tests.
Culture & Benefits
- Fast-paced, hardware-driven environment with a high flight cadence.
- Significant ownership and direct impact on defense-system development.
- Close collaboration with multidisciplinary engineering and program leadership teams.
- Generous benefits package.
- Equal-opportunity workplace with reasonable accommodations available throughout the application and hiring process.
