Principal Member of Technical Staff (Fullstack, Backend-Focused, Python)

Location: On-site at the San Francisco office in the Dogpatch neighborhood; San Francisco and New York listed as role locations.

Salary: $200,000–$350,000 plus equity. A second compensation range of $175,000–$240,000 plus equity is also listed.

What you will do

• Define the long-term technical architecture for the product platform.
• Lead the design, implementation, and maintenance of backend services, APIs, databases, and data pipelines.
• Drive engineering standards, reliability, scalability, monitoring, and observability across the organization.
• Partner with engineering leadership on technical strategy and roadmap planning.
• Mentor senior engineers and improve engineering practices across teams.
• Collaborate with engineering, product, and research teams to ship AI-driven features and services.

Requirements

• Typically 10+ years of software engineering experience across backend and frontend development.
• Strong experience with a backend language such as Python or Node; Python is required for the interview process.
• Experience designing and consuming APIs, including FastAPI and REST.
• Familiarity with React, Next, or similar frontend frameworks and modern web development practices.
• Working knowledge of relational or document databases, cloud infrastructure, Docker, version control, CI/CD, and automated testing.
• Strong curiosity, growth mindset, and eagerness to learn in a fast-moving environment.

Nice to have

• Experience with data-heavy systems, scientific tooling, or ML/AI-adjacent platforms.
• Prior startup or small-team experience with end-to-end ownership.
• GraphQL and Kubernetes experience.
