TL;DR
Big Data Scientist for the Services Analytics Plateau (Aerospace): Developing data analytics solutions and services for aircraft and fleet data with an accent on statistical analysis, machine learning, predictive maintenance, and big data engineering. Focus on building ELT pipelines and data products with Spark, creating production code in Python, developing MCMC simulations, and presenting findings to engineers and managers.

Location: Manching, Germany; mobile working, flexible working hours, part-time options, job sharing, and sabbaticals are available.

What you will do

  • Identify high-value data analytics opportunities and support discovery through structured questions and exploratory analysis.
  • Collect, transform, cleanse, link, and analyze aircraft sensor, maintenance, and fleet data.
  • Prepare datasets for machine learning models, determine relationships between source attributes, and apply data mining and statistical techniques.
  • Create and validate analytical and machine learning models, including health monitoring and predictive maintenance use cases.
  • Develop Python prototypes and production code, Spark-based ELT pipelines, data products, and MCMC simulations.
  • Present findings to stakeholders, support proofs of concept, and collaborate with engineering, design, governance, and support teams.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree, ideally a PhD, in statistics, mathematics, computer science, physics, aerospace engineering, or a related field.
  • Several years of relevant experience in data-driven projects, preferably in an Agile environment.
  • Experience processing aircraft sensor, maintenance, fleet, ILS, or in-service data, preferably in aerospace health monitoring or predictive maintenance.
  • Strong knowledge of statistical analysis, probability distributions, statistical tests, anomaly detection, and Bayesian inference.
  • Experience with Spark, Spark-submit jobs, ELT pipelines, Python in production, DevOps, Unix/Bash, SQL, and databases.
  • Fluent English is required; German is advantageous.

Nice to have

  • PhD in a relevant technical or quantitative discipline.
  • Experience with Spotfire, Streamlit, or Django visualization and frontend applications.
  • Knowledge of aircraft or fleet data, Integrated Logistics Support, and in-service analytics.
  • German language skills.
