Contract Student Worker - Autonomy Safety Data Engineer

Location: Foster City, CA; Boston, MA; or Seattle, WA. Work on-site at one of the office locations.

Compensation: $30/hour.

Zoox is an autonomous ridehailing company developing a fully electric, purpose-built robotaxi.

What you will do

• Support the design, development, and iteration of data-driven safety risk models for the autonomy stack.
• Develop and maintain dataset management pipelines covering curation, labeling, versioning, and quality checks.
• Analyze large-scale driving and simulation datasets to identify trends, edge cases, and opportunities to improve autonomy performance.
• Define and run empirical experiments to evaluate safety-relevant signals and model assumptions.
• Communicate complex results, trade-offs, and uncertainty to engineers, researchers, and stakeholders.

Requirements

• Currently pursuing a B.S. or M.S. in engineering, computer science, statistics, physics, or a similar quantitative field.
• Strong programming skills in Python.
• Solid data manipulation knowledge, including SQL, PySpark, or Scala.
• Foundation in statistics, machine learning, and risk or reliability modeling.
• Ability to work independently through ambiguous, open-ended problems with a researcher’s mindset.
• Currently enrolled in a relevant B.S. or M.S. program, available for at least three months and at least 20 hours per week, and able to work on-site.

Nice to have

• Experience with safety, reliability, or risk modeling, including survival analysis, Bayesian methods, or causal inference.
• Experience with large-scale dataset management, data pipelines, or MLOps tooling.
• Background in autonomous vehicles, robotics, or a related quantitative discipline.
• Prior research experience taking ambiguous problems from initial concept to results.
• Strong written, verbal, teamwork, and collaboration skills.
