Staff Machine Learning Engineer (AI/LLM)

Location: Remote within the United States, with office spaces in San Jose, California, and Draper, Utah.

Salary: $165,800–$233,800 USD gross annual, depending on geographic zone.

What you will do

• Own the technical direction of machine learning initiatives from problem framing and research through production deployment and measurement.
• Prototype, fine-tune, and ship models while writing production code and mentoring engineers.
• Lead the LLM strategy, including open-weight model fine-tuning, evaluation harnesses, and build-versus-buy decisions across accuracy, cost, latency, and privacy.
• Design data flywheels with labeling pipelines, human-in-the-loop feedback, and production drift monitoring.
• Set standards for model evaluation, calibration, reproducibility, and responsible deployment.
• Influence roadmaps with product and platform leadership and develop mid-level and senior ML engineers.

Requirements

• 8+ years of related software or machine learning engineering experience with a Bachelor's degree, 6+ years with a Master's degree, 3+ years with a PhD, or equivalent experience.
• Staff-level or equivalent technical scope with deep hands-on experience in PyTorch, distributed training, experiment tracking, feature stores, and vector stores.
• Production experience fine-tuning LLMs using supervised fine-tuning, LoRA/QLoRA, preference optimization such as DPO/RLHF, and structured-output training.
• Knowledge of foundation and open-weight models, document AI, OCR pipelines, layout-aware models, and vision-language models.
• Production experience in recommendation systems, personalization, or search and ranking, including feedback loops and position bias.
• Strong fundamentals in sampling, class imbalance, evaluation design, calibration, leakage detection, distribution shift, and experiment analysis.

Nice to have

• Publications, patents, or open-source ML contributions.
• Experience with privacy-constrained ML, on-premises or VPC model hosting, PII handling, or data governance in fintech or healthcare.
• Experience designing multi-model routing or cascade architectures that balance cost, latency, and accuracy.
