Senior Machine Learning Engineer (AI)

What you will do

• Develop and improve cutting-edge machine learning models for query understanding, including autocomplete, smart compose, and intent classification.
• Build and productionize end-to-end ML pipelines for both batch and real-time search ranking use cases.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify business opportunities and refine requirements for ML-driven search features.
• Leverage modern NLP and LLMs to parse free-form multimodal queries and anticipate user intent.
• Optimize model serving and experimentation efficiency to ensure high-performing, low-latency search experiences.

Requirements

• Must be based in the United States in a state where Airbnb has a registered entity.
• 5+ years of industry experience in applied Machine Learning with an MS or PhD in a relevant field.
• Strong programming skills in Scala, Python, Java, or C++.
• Deep understanding of ML best practices, including A/B testing, feature engineering, and model selection.
• Experience with at least three of the following: Tensorflow, PyTorch, Kubernetes, Spark, Airflow, Kafka, or Hive.
• Proven experience building end-to-end machine learning models in a production environment.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with building AI-native and agentic search experiences.
• Exposure to architectural patterns for high-scale software applications.
