Staff Mechanical Engineer (Mobile Robotics)

Location: Wilmington, Massachusetts, USA — HQ; onsite role with up to 50% travel to client and customer locations

Salary: $125,000–$171,600 base pay annually, plus medical, dental, vision, disability, 401(k), PTO, and other benefits.

What you will do

• Lead the design and development of mobile robot chassis, drivetrains, suspension, actuation, payload handling mechanisms, and structural components.
• Select and integrate motors, gearboxes, bearings, wheels, and other drivetrain components while performing torque, speed, durability, and lifecycle analysis.
• Develop mechanical mechanisms and structures that meet performance, reliability, and manufacturability requirements.
• Perform FEA, kinematic studies, tolerance stack-ups, prototype validation, and testing.
• Drive DFM/DFA activities with manufacturing partners, suppliers, and contract manufacturers to improve cost, quality, and scalability.
• Collaborate with electrical, firmware, software, systems, manufacturing, and service teams; mentor junior engineers and support releases and field validation.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
• At least 8 years of mechanical design experience, including 3 years developing mobile robots, AGVs/AMRs, automation equipment, autonomous vehicles, drones, or similar electromechanical systems.
• Experience designing electromechanical systems for deep-freeze and condensing environments.
• Expertise with SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD software, GD&T, drawing release, BOM management, and PLM/PDM systems.
• Strong knowledge of machine design, structural analysis, FEA, kinematics, tolerance analysis, drivetrain design, and manufacturing processes including machining, sheet metal fabrication, and injection molding.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to drive and/or fly to customer locations; familiarity with mobile robotics safety standards such as ISO 3691 or ANSI/ITSDF.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree or another advanced engineering degree.
